  • Project Description: Installation of plumbing and HVAC for a new-build data center.

  • Project Highlights: Speer Mechanical was contracted to install all plumbing and HVAC for this new 19,000 SF Tier III data center. The project included a mechanical room with three chilled water pumps, three dry coolers, two generators, two heat pumps and an air handler. In addition to the main HVAC system, two computer rooms required nine Liebert units, each requiring an elaborate control system, with all piping located under the raised computer-room floor.

    Tier III Data Center Requirements:

    • Single non-redundant distribution path serving the IT equipment
    • Non-redundant capacity components
    • Basic site infrastructure guaranteeing 99.671% availability
    • Redundant site infrastructure capacity components guaranteeing 99.741% availability
    • Multiple independent distribution paths serving the IT equipment
    • ALL IT equipment must be dual-powered and fully compatible with the topology of a site's architecture
    • Concurrently maintainable site infrastructure guaranteeing 99.982% availability

A 15,000-gallon, fuel-oil tank was installed in an 18' deep, 40' long and 14' wide hole that was excavated within a few feet of a high voltage transformer in a high water table area during rainy conditions. Despite the extra safety precautions and the complexity of this project, Speer Mechanical was able to complete the job within the eight-month schedule.
